WASHINGTON — Michael Brown, the teenager whose killing by the police in Ferguson, Missouri, has set off more than a week of protests in the town and nationwide, was shot at least six times.
That’s the conclusion of a preliminary private autopsy performed on Sunday, the New York Times reports.
Dr. Michael Baden, a well-known medical examiner based in New York, tells the Times that Brown was shot twice in the head, including likely the last one in the top of his head. Baden says that all the bullets were fired into Brown’s front, and likely – though not certainly – not at very close range.
Attorney General Eric Holder announced on Sunday that the Justice Department would conduct its own autopsy due to “the extraordinary circumstances involved in this case and at the request of the Brown family.”
“This one here looks like his head was bent downward,” Baden told the times, indicating a bullet wound at the top of Brown’s head. “It can be because he’s giving up, or because he’s charging forward at the officer.”
Brown emphasized that no conclusions can be drawn from his autopsy.
“We need more information; for example, the police should be examining the automobile to see if there is gunshot residue in the police car,” he told the Times.
