WASHINGTON – Double the toll road, double the need to start saving some cash.
Drivers who find themselves regularly traveling in the Dulles area may need to brace themselves for a double-whammy toll increase. Tolls on both the private Dulles Greenway and the publicly owned Dulles Toll Road are scheduled to go up Jan. 1.
Drivers traveling all the way from the Dulles Toll Road interchange at the Beltway to the Dulles Greenway terminus in Leesburg will need to pony up an extra 55 cents for a one-way trip and another $1.10 for a round trip.
Traveling round-trip every weekday adds up to an additional amount of more than $280 per year.
While that may not seem like much, Greenway officials have approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission to raise tolls every year between now and 2020.
And the Dulles Toll Road — operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority — will be using tolls to partially fund the construction of Metrorail to Dulles International Airport, meaning more increases are likely to come in the near future.
