ARLINGTON, Va. – If you want better roads and bridges, you’re likely going to have to sit through construction delays.

While that scene is playing out all across the region, the congested U.S. 50 corridor in Arlington is fast becoming a construction hot spot.

On March 22, long-term closures go into place on 10th Street and North Fairfax Drive near U.S. 50. Also, westbound U.S. 50 will be closed for a good portion of that weekend.

This is all part of a $39 million project by the Virginia Department of Transportation to improve interchanges on U.S. 50 at Courthouse Road and 10th Street.

VDOT says when the project is finished in the fall of 2013, drivers will have improved bridges, ramps, intersections and better traffic flow with new dedicated acceleration and deceleration lanes.

Here’s a complete list of the upcoming closures in the work zone:

U.S. 50 closure and detour March 24 and 25

Westbound U.S. 50/Arlington Boulevard will be closed from 8 a.m. March 24 to 8 p.m. March 25 between Courthouse Road and 10th Street as crews demolish the 10th Street Bridge. Drivers are encouraged to avoid U.S. 50 or use 10th Street to Washington Boulevard back to U.S. 50 as a detour. Signs also will be posted to encourage to use Interstate 66 and other alternate routes.

Long-term closures at 10th Street, U.S. 50 and Fairfax Drive

Beginning March 22, several closures will be in place until work nears completion in fall 2013:

  • The bridge from southbound 10th Street to eastbound U.S. 50 will close as crews continue bridge construction. Drivers can use Washington Boulevard to North Pershing Drive back to U.S. 50 as a detour.
  • The ramp from westbound U.S. 50 to North Fairfax Drive between Courthouse Road and 10th Street will close as crews reconstruct and realign the road. Drivers should use 10th Street as a detour.
  • Fairfax Drive between Scott Street and Courthouse Road will be closed. Scott, Taft and Troy streets will remain open. Drivers can use North Scott Street to 13th Street North to access. Also, drivers will not be able to make left turns from Courthouse Road to Fairfax Drive.
  • Detours and electronic message boards should be on hand to alert drivers to the closures and provide alternate routes.
