Gerald Halpin’s Mount Vernon property sells for $18.6M

A 16.5-acre property originally part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate just sold for $18.6 million, the highest sale price in the Washington area in more than two-and-a-half years.

TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, which represented the seller, announced the sale Monday but did not disclose the buyer or seller.

The sale has not been recorded in Fairfax County property records yet, but records list the estate’s most recent owner as Gerald Halpin, founder of West Group Management LLC, which developed much of the original Tysons Corner.

River View Estate, at 7979 East Boulevard in the unincorporated area of Alexandria, is the single largest privately held and developable parcel of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, TTR Sotheby’s says. It includes more than 380 feet of waterfront property on the Potomac River, a 6,000-square-foot circa 1914 main house and a guest house.

It is the highest sale in the history of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, Sotheby’s International’s local affiliate. Heather Corey and Theresa Sullivan Twiford of the Alexandria office handled the sale.

The last residential sale to exceed that price was in July 2011, when 1623 28th St. NW in Georgetown sold to Ryuji Ueno and Sachiko Kuno, who founded Sucampo Pharmaceuticals Inc.
