Oakton fights Girl Scouts’ request to build storage warehouse

WASHINGTON – The Girl Scouts have been at odds with the Oakton, Va., community over their request to build a storage facility, and officials will take up the case Wednesday.

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital wants to build a 6,000-square-foot warehouse in Camp Crowell to serve as a retreat for scouts and house camping gear and equipment.

Girl Scout leaders determined it would be more financially feasible to pay $600,000 for the permanent facility, rather than pay $50,000 a year to rent one, according to Reston Now.

Opponents of the warehouse building have created a website called Stop Industrial Oakton. They site a number of concerns.

“Placing a regional distribution warehouse, an industrial zone operation, in the midst of a residential zone would have a significantly negative impact on property values, resulting in the erosion of the tax base for an economically strong, and hence important, portion of Fairfax County,” the group posted on its website.

The Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals will hold a hearing on the issue Nov. 20.
