Sheriff’s deputy arrested in Alexandria man’s death

WASHINGTON – Alexandria Police have arrested Arlington County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Patterson for the May 22 homicide of Julian Dawkins.

Dawkins was shot by Patterson, who was off-duty, after an early morning confrontation in the Lynhaven area of Alexandria. After an autopsy, his death was ruled a homicide.

Patterson was arrested at his home in Spotsylvania County Thursday evening. No details have been released about why the shooting occurred.

Police say they responded to reports of a person being shot in the 100 block of Lynhaven Drive, in Del Ray, at 12:45 a.m.

Police initially classified the shooting as a “suspicious death,” but are not ready to confirm anything criminal occurred.
