Firefighters on duty during Cecil Mills incident may be punished (Video)

WASHINGTON — Three D.C. firefighters who ignored a dying man may soon be punished by the department for their actions, according to a report from NBC Washington.

Garrett Murphy, George Martin and David Dennis will answer questions during disciplinary hearings next month. NBC Washington reports their trial boards will begin May 12 and will likely be closed to the public.

They face possible punishment, including termination.

The three men were among five firefighters on duty in January when Cecil Mills had a heart attack near their firehouse.

Mills, 77, collapsed with a heart attack Jan. 26, right across the street from Engine 26. People who witnessed his emergency tried desperately to get help from firefighters at the station, but no one at the station provided Mills with help and he ultimately died.

A fourth crew member, Remy Jones, is a rookie, which means the department can punish him without a trial board. Rookies don’t have the same rights as other firefighters, NBC Washington reports.

The lieutenant who was supervising that day, Kellene Davis, went through disciplinary hearings last month. The department accused her of neglecting her duties, but she retired before the trial board could announce a final decision, escaping any potential punishment.

Trial boards are department panels made up of two battalion chiefs and two captains.
