Phones may warn pedestrians of traffic

WASHINGTON – The next generation in automotive safety could include crash protection for pedestrians carrying smartphones.

Honda is testing a safety system that relies on dedicated short range communications, or DSR.

The tests include a DSR device in the vehicle and DSR in a smartphone carried by a pedestrian.

An online demonstration shows a pedestrian walking into an intersection as a car approaches. When the phone is in range of the car, both the driver and the pedestrian are warned.

The technology is also being tested between cars and motorcycles.
