Second phase of Silver Line begins

WASHINGTON – Preliminary work is under way this weekend at Dulles Airport on the second phase of the Silver Line.

Crews are taking photos and doing initial survey work in front of the main terminal on Saarinen Circle and around Autopilot Drive and Air Freight Lane.

The work is not affecting parking or traffic, but work tied to the first phase of the Silver Line will lead to a rough ride for many commuters into the fall.

With construction on the first phase winding down, crews will start repaving Route 7 on Monday. Most work will be done at night, but milled pavement will remain during the day in stretches from the Dulles Toll Road to Route 123. The repaving project is expected to last into the fall.

The first part of the Silver Line is expected to open early next year. Trains will run from the new Wiehle-Reston East station through Tysons Corner and East Falls Church to downtown D.C. and Largo Town Center.

Construction on the second phase of the Silver Line is just getting started. That stretch is expected to open in about six years. Phase Two will extend the Silver Line from Wiehle-Reston East through Dulles Airport and on to Ashburn.
