Cheh questions management of Wilson pool amid investigation

WASHINGTON – After accusations from women who say they were sexually assaulted by employees at D.C.’s Wilson Aquatic Center, one worker is fired and another is suspended.

Now, a local leader is questioning the pool management itself.

“Who are these people? How did they get hired? And how are they entrusted with this facility,” asked D.C. Councilwoman Mary Cheh.

Cheh has been outspoken about the Wilson pool investigation on her community listserv and throughout Ward 3.

“I mean, to run a multi-million dollar operation and not to have control over the people who are in charge over there such as they can have this run of the place in the middle of the night with all of these unacceptable activities, my jaw has dropped so far I don’t know where it is,” Cheh says.

Cheh has been fielding questions from residents who she says have been kept in the dark by the Department Parks and Recreation, which runs the pool.

“This is a mishandling of an event that itself requires looking into. It’s just not the way to run the show,” Cheh says.

The director posted a notice to the public at the pool Monday, Cheh says, informing swimmers of the action being taken against the involved employees.

Cheh says the two employees — one fired, one suspended — have no access to the pool and the public should feel safe going there.
