A free panel discussion, "District of Change: LGBTQ Life in D.C. Then and Now" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 22 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library will include founder and editor of The Daily Dish Andrew Sullivan, community activist for the gay community, citizens of Ward 8 and civil libertarians Philip Pannell, bisexual and feminist author, activist and sex educator Loraine Hutchins, and moderator Mark Joseph Stern, who writes about LGBTQ issues for Slate.

"Out of Many, One" Portrait on National Mall

There's something new to see on the National Mall, and it's only here for a short time. It's a six-acre portrait of a young man's face made by Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada out of sand and topsoil. From October 4-31, visitors will be able to walk through the massive portrait.

The National Museum of the American Indian, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2014, has an exhibit called "Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations" running through Fall of 2018. It documents the history of treaties and includes more than 125 objects. Also, at least 9 original treaties on loan from the National Archives will be displayed on a rotating basis.

The "Making Their Mark: Stories Through Signatures" exhibit at the National Archives runs March 21, 2014-January 5, 2015. It includes Adolf Hitler's signature on his marriage certificate and will, an "X" signed by a slave who couldn't read, and a patent for shoes filed by Michael Jackson and others allowing him to do an amazing signature move on stage. Admission is free.

Highlights include an anthrax-laced letter addressed to Senator Tom Daschle, handcuffs used on Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, and a touch table that lets visitors see if they can spot potentially dangerous mail.
