RI senator quits Eisenhower Memorial project

WASHINGTON (AP) — Another U.S. senator has resigned from the federal commission that is working to build a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower in Washington.

The Eisenhower Memorial Commission announced Friday that Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed had resigned. Reed was one of the original lawmakers working to build the memorial near the National Mall since in 2001.

Reed spokesman Chip Unruh says Reed is stepping down because now is a good time to have someone else bring in new perspectives on the project.

Reed’s resignation follows the departure of Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, who resigned last month.

The memorial project’s design by architect Frank Gehry has drawn scrutiny from critics including Eisenhower’s family. Millions of dollars already have been spent on securing a location for the memorial and developing the design.
