Prep Work For Capital Bikeshare Picks Up

Capital Bikeshare paving at Chevy Chase Drive and Offut Lane Proposed Capital Bikeshare station location in the driveway of the Bethesda Ave.-Elm St. public parking garage

Montgomery County is busy pouring concrete in preparation for Capital Bikeshare, which it hopes to introduce at least in part by Sept. 21, the last official day of summer.

Department of Transportation crews have poured concrete pads to accommodate planned Bikeshare stations at Battery Lane and the Bethesda Trolley Trail and at Chevy Chase Drive and Offut Lane.

According to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, MCDOT plans to shut down the Bethesda Avenue exit lane of the popular county parking garage at Bethesda Row on Thursday and Friday to perform concrete work for a Bikeshare station there. (See above. The station is planned for the area where the planters are now.)

Drivers will be able to exit the garage (known as Garage 57) via the Elm Street exit.

At a meeting in June, the county and Bikeshare consultant Paul DeMaio detailed all 15 planned locations for Bikeshare. While the list wasn’t finalized, the county is moving ahead with some aspects of installation.

The busiest anticipated Bikeshare location will be at the Bethesda Metro station, where DeMaio said there could be as many as 19 spaces for bikes.
