July 4 is a week from today and if you’re looking for a non-National Mall way to celebrate, there are a number of local fireworks displays and celebrations to consider:
Chevy Chase Village, 10:30 a.m.: The Village will celebrate the 4th of July with its annual parade. Parade assembly starts at 10:15 a.m. at the Village Hall (5906 Connecticut Ave.) Representatives from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services will lead the parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. and will proceed to Oliver Street Park. A moon bounce, sprinkler, face painting and refreshments will be available. More info.
Town of Chevy Chase, 12 p.m.: The Town will have its own Independence Day parade starting at noon at Chevy Chase Elementary School (4015 Rosemary St.). Come at 11:30 a.m. to decorate bikes, scooters, wagons and baby carriages. The Town will provide supplies. From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be a picnic, catered by Red, Hot & Blue and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream truck. Bring a picnic blanket. The event also includes music and games from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. This event does require an RSVP by tomorrow (Friday). More info.
City of Rockville, 7 p.m.: Rockville’s annual event will start at 7 p.m. at Montgomery College (51 Mannakee St., Rockville). Early events include food and music on the main stage from the Fugitive Brass Quintet. The fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. Bring chairs and blankets. Parking is available in any Montgomery College lot but beware — it may take about an hour to exit the parking lots after the fireworks. More info.
Germantown, Kensington, 9:15 p.m.: The official Montgomery County fireworks displays will happen at the SoccerPlex in South Germantown Recreational Park (18041 Central Park Circle, Boyds) and Albert Einstein High School (11135 Newport Rd., Kensington).
Both events include concerts: Germantown’s will kick off at 7 p.m. Einstein’s will start at 7:30 p.m. There will be no on-site parking for the Einstein display, except for handicapped parking, so you’ll need to take a shuttle bus beginning at 6:15 p.m. from the JC Penney parking lot at Westfield Wheaton Mall. Food vendors will be on-site. More info.
Kenwood Club, 9:30ish? on July 3: The Bethesda country club’s annual fireworks display is private, but as blogger Robert Dyer points out, nearby residents traditionally have an excellent view. The club is at 5601 River Rd. and the display is set to begin sometime around 9:30 p.m. if you’re looking for fireworks a little closer to home.
