WASHINGTON — Passengers who traveled through Dulles International Airport earlier this month might have been exposed to measles, officials warn.
The Loudoun County Health Department says anyone who was at the international terminal or baggage claim in the main terminal June 7 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. could have been exposed to the virus, which was carried by an overseas traveler.
Measles can surface as long as 21 days after exposure. Symptoms include fever that exceeds 101 degrees, a runny nose, watery eyes, a cough and an eventual rash.
“Measles is spread very easily,” says Loudoun County Health Director Dr. David Goodfriend. “It’s an airborne infection, so as an abundance of caution we’re are putting the word out to people.”
People experiencing symptoms should contact their doctor before going to the office or a local emergency room where the virus could spread.
No other cases have been reported since June 7. Goodfriend says this case is a good reminder to get vaccinated before traveling outside the United States.
