Teen’s tiny device would quickly charge cellphones (Video)

WASHINGTON – An 18-year-old has developed a tiny device that fits inside cellphone batteries and charges a phone in 20 to 30 seconds.

Eesha Khare, 18, of Saratoga, Calif., invented a so-called supercapacitor.

The device won her $50,000 and second place at this weekend’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Eesha’s invention also could be used with car batteries.

The top prize of $75,000 went to Ionut Budisteanu, 19, of Romania. He used artificial intelligence to create a low-cost, self-driving car.

Samantha Marquez of Midlothian, Va., won $5,000 for the best idea in Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering.
