Historic Frederick neighborhood calls for more traffic enforcement

FREDERICK, Md. – The residents of a historical part of Frederick, Md., are tired of traffic speeding down their street, so they are working to recruit more police enforcement to the neighborhood.

The group of residents live on South Street, near the turn to Market Street. A major accident happened just last week on South and I streets, where first responders had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the driver.

It wasn’t an isolated incident, according to Jimmy O’Donnell, a longtime resident who lives on South Street.

“We’ve had a lot of accidents because of speeding and running red lights,” O’Donnell says.

O’Donnell has spoken to Mayor Randy McClement in the past about this problem and say he feels the mayor doesn’t care because South Street is a lower middle class, he says.

He says the mayor cares more for the wealthier parts of town.

“Considering that I live a few blocks away from this neighborhood, nothing could be further from the truth,” McClement says.

With a force of 141 officers, McClement says he is doing his best to cover the city. He says he is aware of the accident situation on South Street and will look into the possibility of installing red light cameras to help solve part of the problem.
