Mysterious notes return to Manassas, confounding police

WASHINGTON – The mysterious and threatening notes have returned to some doorsteps in and around Manassas, and there’s still no clue as to who is leaving them.

Two more of the notes were left in the Sumner Lake Boulevard area of Manassas the week of March 2, bringing the total number of notes to 18 since December.

Manassas Police Sgt. Lowell Nevilll says the notes, which say disparaging things about one local resident, are short, and sometimes incoherent.

“There’s a lack of grammatical correctness. The spelling sometimes is a little off, and there’s a certain type of rambling nature to them,” he says.

“We’re not talking about long treatises. We’re talking about 15 to 20 words.”

Nevill says there doesn’t seem to be any connection between the man targeted in the notes and the homes where they have been left or the people who live in those homes.

The notes started showing up in December, then stopped until this past weekend. No one has seen the person leaving them.

Police have talked to the person criticized in the notes. Nevill says the man has no idea why the notes are being left. The man is not a public figure.
