WASHINGTON – Pedestrian traffic fatalities in the District are more than four times the national average, according to a 2010 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study released Monday.
In 2010, more than 4,000 pedestrians died nationally in traffic accidents, which is a 4 percent increase from 2009. The number makes up 13 percent of all traffic fatalities.
However, of the 24 traffic fatalities in D.C. in 2010, 13 were pedestrians, placing the percentage at 54.2 percent, well above the national average.
In Maryland, 20.5 percent of traffic fatalities were pedestrians. Virginia was below the National average with 9.9 percent.
Wyoming had the lowest, with 1.9 percent.
Overall, alcohol was a factor, by either the driver or pedestrian, in 47 percent of fatal accidents.
