Record-breaking heat doesn’t keep Nats fans away

WASHINGTON – The Nationals are hot and fans are stoked as the team goes for its 50th win of the year. Even the earth-scorching heat wasn’t enough to keep fans from Sunday’s game.

Fans were lined up before the game trying to get autographs as the players were entering the stadium.

Valerie Horn from Silver Spring was one of those fans. She is thrilled and says she was caught off guard by the team’s performance this year.

“It’s great but I didn’t see it coming. I was very surprised,” Horn says.

Horn is optimistic about the second half of the season.

“I think they’ll do the same. I’m not quite sure how they’ve done it so far, great pitching,” she says.

So when is it too hot to keep her from the game considering that Sunday’s temperatures were in the triple digits.

“This is close. This is real close. I’ve got my frozen water and I’m going to see how long I last at the game,” Horn says.

Merrill Woells, from Calvert County, is pumped.

“The Nats are on fire,” he says.

And Woells, a firefighter, knows a thing or two about fire. He says the hot weather is no big deal and he’s hoping the team keeps the hot streak going.

“Hopefully we go to the big show this year,” Woells says.

Three of the Nationals players will be heading to Kansas to play in Tuesday night’s All-Star game.

“It’s pretty good to see Washington finally well represented in the All-Star Game,” Woells says.

Matt Kolp, who lives in Lancaster, Pa., is a die-hard Nats fan. He’s happy the Nats are doing so well right now.

“It’s great to finally have a winning team,” he says.

Kolp says he became a Nationals fan because the team’s affiliate AA minor league team (Senators) is based in Harrisburg, Pa., which is only a half hour from his house.

He says the Senators is his team and so becoming a Nats fan was a natural progression.
