Tow truck hits ambulance in Prince George’s County

CLINTON, Md. – A Prince George’s County ambulance was involved in a multiple vehicle collision Sunday, sending four people to the hospital.

Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire Department, says the crash happened around 5 p.m. at Branch Avenue and Surrats Road.

The ambulance had its sirens on when it was making a left hand turn from Branch Avenue onto Surrats Road, when a tow truck traveling north on Route 5 broadsided the ambulance. The ambulance then struck a passenger vehicle.

Brady says the career firefighter/medic driving the ambulance was taken to a trauma center with injuries that aren’t considered serious. The volunteer/EMT in the back of the ambulance sustained less serious injuries than the driver.

The patient being transported in the ambulance was taken in another ambulance to the hospital on another ambulance. It’s not clear if that person sustained any injuries in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle in the crash was taken to a trauma center as a precaution.

Brady says the ambulance was severely damaged in the crash, and could be deemed a total loss.

County police and fire are still investigating the crash. Charges against the tow truck driver are still pending.
