CHESTER, N.J. (AP) — A vehicle struck several people at a northern New Jersey fall festival, killing a child and leaving two adults hurt, prosecutors said.
Morris County Prosecutor Frederic Knapp said Monday that a pedestrian was killed in the accident at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday near the Alstede Farms in Chester, about 40 miles west of Newark.
The identity of the child and the condition of the other two victims wasn’t released.
The farm hosted its 31st annual Chester Harvest Festival on Saturday and Sunday.
The farm said on its Facebook page that its staff “grieve and mourn for the families” hurt in the accident and that “our sincere prayers and heartfelt thoughts are extended to everyone involved.”
It said it couldn’t comment further while the investigation continues.
NJ.com reported that investigators Sunday night were processing evidence around two shuttle buses. WCBS-TV reported that one of the buses was taken away with visible bumper damage Sunday evening.
Mayor Bill Cogger told WCBS-TV that he’s been warning of the weekly traffic jams in and around the farm on the weekends of the festival for years.
“No one is more frustrated than I am,” he told the TV station.
“It is completely unconscionable, it is absurd to have this amount of traffic with no oversight. We have repeatedly complained to Alstede,” neighbor Andrew O’Connor told the TV station.
