Memorabilia auction raises $1.1 million

LAGUNA, Calif. (AP) — The John Moores Trophy fetched just over $195,000 at a sports memorabilia auction that benefits youth sports in southern California.

The trophy, which was established in 1938 to recognize the World’s Amateur Baseball Championship, topped the bidding of items from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection. Other memorabilia sold included a Heisman Trophy replica honoring winners from 1935-54 ($75,205), Bill Tilden’s U.S. National Championship Men’s singles medal from 1921 ($69,184) and an autographed photo of Cy Young ($66,734). Over $1.1 million was raised.

A two-page letter from George Washington dated Dec. 5, 1778 — signed G. Washington — went for $64,507.
