Wisconsin DNR creates new state park, trails app

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials have created a smartphone app that allows users to access guides to state parks, forests and trails and track each other as they use the properties.

The app offers descriptions of each park, forest and trail, lists of property-specific amenities, maps and directions. It includes a GPS mapping feature that will locate the closest properties and give users tours, record trail distances and time elapsed and mark photo waypoints.

The app also comes with a calendar of events for each property and a feature that allows friends to keep track of each other on a trail or in a state forest or park.

The app, dubbed the Wisconsin State Parks and Forests Pocket Ranger, is available on iTunes and Android Market.
