Virginia Beach woman named honorary Green Beret

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach woman has received a rare honor from the U.S. Army Special Forces.

Media outlets report that 97-year-old Doris Baker was inducted as an honorary member of the regiment on Wednesday during a ceremony at the retirement community where she lives.

The Special Forces also is known as the Green Berets.

Special Forces Commandant Col. Matthew Carran told the gathering that Baker is one of 10 only people to receive the honor.

Baker ran the Defense Department School for children of Green Berets in Germany for 39 years.

Carran says Baker went beyond the call of duty. She offered guidance and served as a mentor to students and their families.
