Teacher charged with having sexual relationship with student

WASHINGTON — A Stafford County, Virginia high school teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student, including sending him nude photos of herself.

Erica Lynne Mesa, 27, of Fredericksburg, Virginia has taught math and coached softball and volleyball at Colonial Forge for about five years. Mesa taught under her maiden name of Manning until two years ago.

She was arrested Monday by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, accused of having a sexual relationship with a boy, including incidents in February when the boy was 16, in May and in September of this year. He is now 17.

The charges of indecent liberties by a custodian and solicitation of a minor using a computer device have sparked a flood of responses from students.

Many of the students say they feel sorry for a fellow volleyball coach and teacher at the school — the man Mesa married two years ago.

The Stafford County Public School system has placed Mesa on administrative leave.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing.
