PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Norfolk Naval Shipyard has a new commanding officer.
Capt. Scott Brown assumed the duties of the Portsmouth-based shipyard on Friday. The shipyard is the oldest industrial facility belonging to the U.S. Navy. It specializes in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines.
Brown relieved Capt. Mark Bridenstine during a change of command ceremony at the shipyard’s Trophy Park. Brown previously served aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt as its reactor officer.
The shipyard is the fourth largest employer in the Hampton Roads area with more than 9,000 civilians and an annual payroll of about $700 million.
