Uber begins operating in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The ride-sharing company Uber is launching in Richmond.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the company began offering service in the city Thursday.

The move comes after Virginia decided to allow Uber and Lyft to operate under a temporary agreement between the companies and the state.

That came after state officials told the companies to cease their operations in Virginia because they didn’t have the proper licenses.

Ride-sharing companies use smartphone apps to dispatch drivers who use their personal vehicles to give people rides. The drivers then share the fares they collect with the companies.
