2 I-64 bridges in Rockbridge getting facelifts

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Two Interstate 64 bridges in Rockbridge County are getting face lifts.

Work began this spring to rehabilitate the eastbound and westbound bridges spanning the Maury River in the Lexington area.

The eastbound bridge will be closed later this summer. The westbound bridge will be closed during the summer of 2015. The project is expected to be completed in 2016.

Virginia Department of Transportation bridge engineer Rex Pearce tells WDBJ-TV (http://bit.ly/1sHkTkd) that the work includes installing new decks and structural steel retro-fits.

Built in 1975, the bridges are known as delta frame bridges because their structural steel support frames are inverted triangles. The Greek letter delta is an inverted triangle.

VDOT received an $11.9 million federal grant to help pay for the $16 million project.
