National register adds Danville neighborhood

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — A Danville neighborhood that once catered to textile and tobacco-processing workers has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The city says the Mechanicsville Historic District began in the late 19th century and early 20th century as an ethnically mixed working-class neighborhood of tradesmen, educators, skilled workers and laborers. The oldest existing residences were built in the 1890s.

The historic district was placed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in March. The city said Monday in a news release that the neighborhood was added to the national register last month.
