WASHINGTON – A motorcycle draped in black stands in front of Prince William County Police Headquarters Tuesday in honor of Officer Chris Yung, who died in a fiery crash while responding to another accident.

Prince William County Police released additional details of the Monday afternoon crash that killed Yung, 35, and shut down Nokesville Road/Route 28 for hours as the department plans for a candlelight vigil to remember Yung’s service.

Police say both Yung and the driver of a Dodge Caravan had a green light when the minivan turned left toward a shopping center on Nokesville road in Bristow. Yung was travelling in the opposite direction when the two vehicles crashed.

Yung’s police motorcycle and the minivan caught fire as a result of the impact, police say.

Two off-duty firefighters and two bystanders pulled Yung from his burning motorcycle and tried to revive him before he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Caravan driver was a 69-year-old woman from Gainesville. Police did not release her name. No charges have been filed at this time but the crash remains under investigation, police say.

Neither the driver of the minivan nor her passenger were injured in the crash.

Yung, a former Marine who served a tour in Iraq, is survived by his wife and three children. He is the third Prince William County officer to die in line of duty since the department’s founding in 1970.

The police department praised the two civilians and other rescuers who risked their lives to help.
