WASHINGTON – There was another casualty at the University of Virginia on Tuesday as the vice rector of the university resigned.
Mark Kington, second in command of the university board, offered his resignation in a letter to Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports.
“I believe that this is the right thing to do and I hope that it will begin a needed healing process at the university,” Kington writes.
The university’s president, Teresa Sullivan, was controversially ousted recently in a move many complained wasn’t properly explained. Backlash against Sullivan’s abrupt departure has grown since the announcement.
The university board is now facing sharp criticism for doing much of their decision-making behind closed doors.
McDonnell weighed in on Tuesday.
“In retrospect, there are some things they should have done differently that would have helped to avoid some of the heartache in that UVa community,” he says.
