WASHINGTON – WTOP’s traffic reports could include updates on congestion near the Five Guys Interchange or on the State Farm Insurance Bridge.
That’s if a proposal from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell that would allow the state to sell naming rights to its transportation infrastructure passes the General Assembly.
Under the proposal, private entities will be able to put their names on highways, interchanges, bridges and other infrastructure for an annual fee.
The fees from the naming rights would go towards raising money for road and bridge maintenance.
No specifics about how much the fees would be have been announced, only that the Commonwealth Transportation Board will establish rules, fees and revenue projections for the program in the future.
Last year, McDonnell announced a plan to allow private companies to bid on the state’s rest areas.
