Pakistan Olympic body avoids suspension by IOC

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Pakistan’s Olympic committee has escaped suspension by the IOC after the government stopped interfering in its affairs, ending doubt over Pakistan’s participation in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The International Olympic Committee warned Pakistan it would be suspended this week unless it complied with rules banning government interference.

The IOC says Tuesday there have been “very positive developments” following meetings involving all sides.

The IOC says the government has expressed “its full respect of and exclusive support to” the IOC-recognized Pakistan Olympic Association.

The IOC says “as a result of these developments,” the executive board “concluded that the POA should not be suspended.”

The IOC also says the Olympic body in Gambia is expected to return to its headquarters shortly. The building was seized by police on orders from the government in April.
