WASHINGTON – If you’re looking for a puppy, now is the perfect time to adopt one at the Washington Animal Rescue League in D.C., which is currently caring for a surplus of wriggling, pouncing, adorable puppies.
The shelter recently received an influx of dogs from shelters in southern states. Matt Williams, chief communications officer with WARL, says the dogs are not from puppy mills.
“Usually (they come) from overcrowded shelters. We have a lot of partners in the South that may be the only shelter in that county and they get inundated with dogs,” Williams says.
Manny of the dogs WARL took in from those shelters were pregnant. Now WARL has more than 25 puppies that are looking for a home, says Williams, calling it the perfect puppy storm.
“It’s great problem for us to have, but it’s a rare problem for us to have. We have all kinds of puppies. We have hound mixes, terrier mixes, lab mixes, you name it,” he says.
Williams says the shelter has scheduled two upcoming adoption events for potential puppy parents:
- Fall in Love, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Fitzgerald AutoMall in Bethesda, Md.
- Barktoberfest, 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, at Yards Park, which is next to Nats Stadium.
WARL recommends anyone who adopts a puppy enroll the dog in the league’s Puppy Kindergarten class.
