WASHINGTON – The D.C. chapter of the Guardian Angels is patrolling a new section of the 14th Street corridor after a beating in the area late last week.

Members have started focusing on 14th and W streets in Northwest Washington, about three-quarters of a mile south of the Columbia Heights Metro station.

“We were called in by several people in the area asking for a presence because they thought that could help,” says John Ayala, head of the D.C. chapter.

“Many people walked up to us and informed us of activity that happened in the area, most of it at night,” he says.

The beating that set off their presence involved a man confronting another about littering. The attacker apparently took exception to that and pounced.

The victim ended up in the hospital, Ayala says with frustration.

He says the community was happy to see the Guardian Angels, who patrolled through the night Saturday.

“We’re planning to get out in the area at least twice a week for about five or six hours,” Ayala says.
