Woman in police beating video still hospitalized

WASHINGTON– A lawyer representing the family of a woman who was repeatedly punched by a California Highway Patrol officer on video says the woman is still hospitalized but she’s no longer under mandatory mental evaluation.

Caree Harper says 51-year-old Marlene Pinnock is being treated for head injuries and emotional trauma from the July 1 confrontation. A trust fund has been set up to help pay for treatment.

Pinnock was placed on a psychiatric hold after she was found walking on a freeway west of downtown Los Angeles. The CHP says an officer was trying to restrain her when a driver’s video captured him pinning and repeatedly punching her.

CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow has said he was shocked by the video. The officer is on desk duty while the CHP investigates.
