Barricaded man delayed dismissal for Charles Co. students

WASHINGTON – Charles County Schools delayed dismissal times and kept students at several of its school while police negotiated with a man barricaded inside his St. Charles home Monday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff’s Department told WTOP that an armed man in his 20’s was holed up inside his home in the 1000 block of St. Paul Drive. He was later taken into custody for evaluation.

Several of the county’s schools sheltered students in place or delayed dismissal times because of the nearby police scene.

Students who normally take the bus or who walk to and from Mary B. Neal Elementary, Eva Turner Elementary and Benjamin Stoddert Middle School were kept inside the school. However parents or adults authorized to pick up students were able to come to the school and retrieve their children.

Police closed several streets in the area to traffic, which prevented seven buses from McDonough High School from reaching several bus stops, school officials said.

The high school students also remained inside the building.

School officials said buses would resume normal routes when police re-open the roads.
