Virginia steps up to provide relief to typhoon-hit Philippines

WASHINGTON – Victims of Typhoon Haiyan are getting support from Virginians with proceeds from two benefit concerts going to aid in relief efforts.

The first concert was held Friday night at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill in Alexandria. Tickets sold for $25.

A separate concert will take place 6 p.m. Saturday at the Philippine Cultural Center for Virginia in Virginia Beach. Naomi Estaris, owner of The Travel Outlet, helped organize it.

“As a matter of fact this concert was planned because of the previous weather conditions that was happening in Olongopo with the flooding and the mudslides … so, it was just a matter of timing,” Estaris says.

The Red Cross will handle the donations. Rescue tents, rescue beds, rescue boats and charcoal stoves for victims to cook and purify drinking water are some of the items that will be purchased with the concert proceeds, Estaris says.

Estaris says this is just a start to what will be an ongoing aid effort in the Philippines.

“No typhoon, including this one, will get the Filipinos on their knees,” she says.
