VCU's government school becomes independent

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Commonwealth University's L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs is now an independent school, separate from the College of Humanities and Sciences.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports ( ) that Wilder, the former governor, announced the move Friday on Twitter. He shared a letter from Beverly J. Warren, the school's provost and senior vice president, who said Niraj Verma is the new dean of the independent school. Verma has directed the Wilder School since 2010.

The political science, sociology, economics and international studies programs, which had been part of the Wilder School, will remain in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Criminal justice, homeland security and emergency preparedness, public administration, public policy and administration, and urban and regional planning and studies will remain part of the independent Wilder School.
