Mayor: Baltimore violence casts shadow over city

Friday - 6/28/2013, 7:10pm  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says a weeklong spate of violence "casts a shadow over the city."

The mayor told The Associated Press on Friday that she remains committed to making Baltimore one of the safest big cities in the country. But she understands that it's "hard for anyone to feel safe."

Detectove Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman, says 14 people have been killed in the last week.

Rawlings-Blake says the violence has occurred in problem-plagued neighborhoods and involves repeat offenders, drugs and illegal gangs.

Police Commissioner Anthony Batts has said police will have a beefed-up presence on the streets.

There are more homicides so far this year than there were at the same time in 2012, though the overall number of homicides has dropped in the last 20 years.
