LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Ray Gallegos had 18 points to lead five Huskers in double figures and Nebraska used a two second-half scoring spurts to run past South Carolina State 83-57 Sunday.
Nebraska (3-0) led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but saw South Carolina State (1-3) hit a pair of baskets to open the second half, cutting the lead to 40-35 on layup by Adama Adams with 18:23 remaining.
The Huskers then scored seven straight to take a 47-35 lead on Terran Petteway's jumper with 15:10 left. A Leslee Smith dunk triggered the second Husker run with just over 8 minutes left. Nebraska went up 20 on Deverell Biggs' layup midway through the run that ended with Tai Webster's basket that put Nebraska ahead 75-51 with 6:01 left. Nebraska's biggest lead was 25.
The Bulldogs struggled to score, hitting just 32 percent of their shots against the Husker defense in both halves. Nebraska shot 54 percent in the second half after hitting just 40 percent of its shots against the South Carolina State zone in the first half.
Nebraska made 23 of 32 free throws and South Carolina State was 15 of 23 from the line in a game that saw 44 fouls called on the two teams and Nebraska in the bonus with 14:27 remaining.
Biggs had 17 points for the Huskers, Tai Webster had 13, Smith had 12 and Shavon Shields finished with 10. Jordan Smith had 14 points to lead South Carolina State. Adams finished with 11 for the Bulldogs.
