LORMAN, Miss. (AP) -- Octavius Brown had 15 points and nine rebounds on Sunday as Alcorn State needed to rally late to narrowly escape an upset from NAIA Tougaloo 73-68.
Alcorn State (1-1) took its biggest lead on its final points of the game with only 17 seconds remaining. Both teams traded seven lead changes and tied the score 12 times.
Tougaloo was ahead 37-35 at halftime and led by 10 with 9:58 left in the game before Alcorn State surged to take the lead in the final minutes.
Shaunessy Smith scored 15 points, LeAntwan Luckett had 14 and Davante Hampton added 10 for the Braves.
Gary Love led the way for Tougaloo with 20 points and seven boards. Ramon Wesley had 11 points and Howard Greer added 10 for the Bulldogs.
