Maryland teen shot by stray bullet in the face

WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old Annapolis girl is recovering Monday after police
say a
stray bullet hit her in the face over the weekend.

Annapolis Police say the teen called 911 Saturday night and, with difficulty,
told them she had been shot outside the Hodson Boathouse on St. John’s campus.

“It’s very dark back there, down by the water. They were congregating, heard
shots and fled,” says Cpl. Amy Miguez with Annapolis Police.

The girl was shot in the jaw and rushed to the hospital for surgery.
Investigators don’t believe she was targeted.

“They didn’t see anyone with a gun, weren’t threatened by a gun or anything
like
that. And in the midst of this, this girl was struck but she’s not sure where
the bullets came from or why she was hit,” Miguez says.

The boathouse was being rented for a party and none of the people attending
were
St. John’s students, Miguez says.

They found bullet casings and have interviewed a number of guests from the
party
but investigators are hoping to hear more from those near the scene Saturday
night.

“This is unusual especially for the college campus. We dont have things like
this go on,” she says.

Those with any more information are asked to contact Detective Deborah Sauriol

Gibris at 410-268-9000.

Miguez says the girl is expected to make a full recovery
