Anne Arundel looks to ease rules on chickens

Saturday - 10/5/2013, 6:20pm  ET

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Some Anne Arundel County lawmakers want to ease rules on residents who own backyard poultry.

A bill introduced in the county council would permit residents living on a quarter-acre of land to legally own up to four chickens. Residents with a half-acre of property could own up to eight ducks.

Councilman Chris Trumbauer tells The Capital of Annapolis (http://bit.ly/19ZN9jl that he introduced the bill "because there is a real movement for people to have fresh food."

Still, roosters would not be permitted on less than acre, and any civic association bans on chickens would trump county rules.

A public hearing is scheduled for Oct. 21.
