ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- No Maryland lieutenant governor has ever been elected governor of the state, but Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is hoping to make history by becoming the first.

Brown will formally announce his 2014 gubernatorial bid Friday.

The Democrat says he wants to make Maryland better for more Marylanders. Brown says he'd build on the O'Malley-Brown administration's successes, including reducing crime, improving education and expanding health care.

The two-term lieutenant governor says his campaign will focus on strengthening the state's economy and creating jobs.

If elected, Brown would also become the state's first African-American governor.
