Thursday - 6/28/2012, 11:27am  ET

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick County school system is phasing out a magnet- school program for academically gifted first and second graders.

The Frederick News-Post ( http://bit.ly/LDnxAR) reports that school board members voiced no objections to the plan at a meeting Wednesday in Frederick.

The program will end in the 2014-15 school year after those currently enrolled have moved up to third grade.

Board President Angie Fish says the school system aims to meet the needs of all students in their home schools and challenge every student to excel.

The school system's research director says the best learners in reading and math tend to do at least as well in their home schools as students attending magnet schools.
