Wolf Trap fireworks celebrate summer's unofficial start (Video)

Monday - 5/27/2013, 1:02pm  ET

WASHINGTON - There weren't fireworks at the National Memorial Day Concert on the holiday's eve, but the sky lit up at the National Park for the Performing Arts.

A fireworks show kicked off a sure sign of the summer's start with the annual Wolf Trap Summer Blast Off event Sunday night.

So many turned out early for the free program that the National Park Service police closed the park and parking lots two hours before the start of the show.

The evening began with a rousing concert by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. After the performance, the audience saw one of the most intimate and beautiful fireworks displays in the area.

"They were amazing, probably the best we have ever seen," said one attendee.

"It was incredible, it was like the sky was one fire," said another.

Because of the lack of wind for the first time in days, the bowl-shaped meadow was enveloped in smoke long after the thousands of cars left the Wolf Trap parking lots.
