Holiday getaway day slowed by gray weather

Wednesday - 11/27/2013, 6:25pm  ET

McLEAN, Va. (AP) -- Gray, wet weather that flirted with snow contributed to a grueling getaway day ahead of Thanksgiving.

At the Washington region's three major airports, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport experienced moderate delays Wednesday morning, but they eased through the midday. Fewer delays were reported at Dulles International and Reagan National airports.

The massive storm that hurtled through the eastern U.S. dumped primarily rain on the Washington region. Temperatures dropped during the day and sleet and fat snowflakes fell in parts of the region, but temperatures remained above freezing.

Farther west, the National Park Service closed Skyline Drive because of icy conditions.

On the roads, the Virginia Department of Transportation reported backups of 10 miles on southbound Interstate 95 in northern Virginia in the evening rush, a routine location for gridlock.
