‘Reading Rainbow’ to make return as an app

WASHINGTON – The host of the popular children’s educational show “Reading Rainbow” wants to bring it back as an app.

“Reading Rainbow” went off the air at PBS in 2009, but actor LeVar Burton has kept his passion for children’s education and wants to offer books to kids digitally, School Library Journal reports.

Burton’s business plan began by regaining the show’s already-claimed Twitter handle, @ReadingRainbow, which he won back thanks to online support. A simple request to Twitter for help on Jan. 31 galvanized followers to pass on the plea.

Burton launched his website, Rkidz, last fall, which will be a subscription-based reading experience through iPad and Android devices. For now, the site only sells DVDs of the original show.

Burton says he is not sure how the app will look but has tweeted to his 1.7 million followers to stay tuned.
